MARZO 2019 PAG. 14 - Il comparto crocieristico di Catania è in netta crescita

Un presente in netta crescita  ed un futuro ancor più roseo: questo il bilancio del comparto crociere per il Porto di Catania.
La sua localizzazione geografica, al centro del bacino del Mediterraneo, equidistante dal Canale di Suez, da Gibilterra e dai Porti Europei ed Africani, il clima mite che caratterizza la città durante tutto l’anno, il calore della gente e la sua posizione baricentrica rispetto alle località di particolare attrazione turistica, fanno del Porto di Catania e della città naturale scalo per le navi da crociera e meta da sempre molto apprezzata. 

La stagione crocieristica 2018 si è chiusa in crescita rispetto a quella precedente, con 70 scali e 124.000 passeggeri. Una delle novità di maggior rilievo è stato il ritorno di Costa Crociere che ha effettuato 20 toccate con imbarco e sbarco dal Porto di Catania. Si è inoltre assistito all’arrivo di numerose navi del segmento luxury, quali Club Med, Cruise Europe, Variety Cruises e Voyages to Antiquity.

La stagione crocieristica 2019, che si aprirà il 2 aprile con l’arrivo di Costa Fascinosa, vede un ulteriore netto incremento della presenza di navi da crociera al Porto di Catania. Vi saranno 113 scali con un numero totale di 219.200 passeggeri e si assisterà all’arrivo di nuove compagnie quali la Aegean Cruises e la Marella Cruise.

La Sicilia orientale, con il suo ricchissimo patrimonio culturale, monumentale, paesaggistico ed eno-gastronomico è da sempre prezioso giacimento culturale di grande attrattiva internazionale.
Svariate sono quindi le offerte delle escursioni per il popolo dei crocieristi, che quest’anno, oltre alle sempre ambite, ma già estremamente conosciute Siracusa, Taormina ed Etna, vedranno inserite nuove mete quali ad esempio Piazza Armerina dove si potrà visitare la Villa Romana del Casale con i suoi mosaici unici per integrità e bellezza. Inoltre, per gli amanti dello shopping, sulla via del ritorno da Piazza Armerina a Catania, si potrà effettuare una tappa all’Outlet Village, il più grande shopping mall della Sicilia. Questa ed altre novità caratterizzano l’offerta turistica della stagione ormai alle porte.

Nell’ottica di un sempre più ampio sviluppo del traffico crocieristico, una particolare attenzione verrà dedicata, già a partire da quest’anno, allo sviluppo del “water- front” ed alla realizzazione di una nuova stazione marittima, mediante un concorso di idee internazionale. La progettazione di un moderno ed attrezzato terminal delle crociere, consentirà una sempre più adeguata accoglienza dei turisti che dal porto partiranno per le numerose escursioni. Inoltre, la prossimità con l’importante aeroporto internazionale di Fontanarossa, conferisce allo scalo crocieristico di Catania la possibilità di diventare homeport per le crociere nel Mediterraneo. In attesa della realizzazione del nuovo terminal, è in fase di completamento prima dell’inizio della stagione 2019, un profondo restyling della stazione marittima già esistente.

Si può quindi affermare che il comparto crocieristico del Porto di Catania è in netta crescita e stando ai numeri finora registrati, seppur non definitivi, anche la stagione 2020 vede un aumento delle toccate nave e del numero di passeggeri, dato confortante per l’auspicio di un roseo futuro crocieristico per gli anni a venire.

 Cruise tourism boom in Catania for the season 2019

Its geographical location, at the center of the Mediterranean basin, equidistant from the Suez Canal, Gibraltar and the Europe and African ports, the mild climate that characterizes the city throughout the year, the warmth of people and its central position with respect to some places of particular tourist attraction, make of the Port of Catania and of its city a really appreciated destination for cruise ships 

The 2018 cruise season had a clear increase compared to the previous one, with 70 calls and 124,000 passengers. One of the most important news was the return of Costa Crociere, with 20 calls and homeport activities in Catania. We also witnessed the arrival of numerous luxury segment vessels, such as Club Med, Croisi Europe, Variety Cruises and Voyages to Antiquity.

The 2019 cruise season, which will start on April 2nd  with the arrival of Costa Fascinosa, sees a further sharp increase in the presence of cruise ships in the Port of Catania. There will be 113 calls with a total number of 219,200 passengers and new companies such as the Aegean Cruises and the Marella Cruise will call the Port.

Eastern Sicily, with its extremely rich cultural, monumental, landscape and eno-gastronomic heritage has always been a precious cultural site of great international attraction.

For this reason, many shore excursions around eastern Sicily have always been offered to the cruise people. This year, besides the coveted, but already well known Syracuse, Taormina and Mount Etna, new destinations will be proposed. Piazza Armerina, beautiful city of art nestled in the center of Sicily with its “Villa Romana del Casale” rich in architectural and decorative elements and inserted, since 1997, by UNESCO in the World Heritage List. Furthermore, for shopping lovers, on the way back to Catania, a stopover can be made at the “Outlet Village”, the biggest shopping mall in Sicily. This and much more characterize the tourist offer of the next season which is almost upon us.

With a view to an increasing of the cruise traffic, particular attention will be devoted, starting this year, to the development of the “water front” and the construction of a new cruise terminal, through an international ideas competition. The design of a modern and well-equipped cruise terminal will allow a more adequate reception both for tourists who will leave for the numerous excursions and for those who will embark and disembark in Catania. Furthermore, the proximity to the international airport of Fontanarossa gives the cruise port the possibility of becoming homeports for Mediterranean cruises. Pending the construction of the new cruise terminal, a deep restyling of the already existing one will be completed before the start of the 2019 season.

It can therefore be said that the cruise sector in the Port of Catania is increasing and according to the numbers recorded so far, although not definitive, the 2020 season will also see an increase in ship calls and in the number of passengers, a comforting figure raising hopes for an even brighter future in the years to come.
